Olaf Wipperfürth

August 30, 2010 // Photography

Some of my favorite kind of photography is that in which there are cinematic qualities. Images that might have a shallow depth of field, a bit of grain to them—where it’s like a still ripped from a story. Enter Olaf Wipperfürth who not only has a hilarious name, but is one talent of a photographer. His framing of subjects is fantastic as is his use of color. The paint with that scarf?! Or the photo below where all the skin matches the tones of the wood, but there’s that punctuation of her blue scarf and yellow hand? Or the paisley dress? I’ll get a boner over things half as good as that.

Neil Krug

August 2, 2010 // Photography

Neil makes good pictures. He uses expired polaroid film to get all that fun vintage stuffness. His work reminds me of terrible 70′s fantasy movies on VHS. That is a good thing. He’s got loads of work up on his Flickr.

Holga D

July 1, 2010 // Design + Photography

So, I pretty much need this to be real. Saikat Biswas made this concept of a digital Holga. For one, it’s beautiful. It’s a design Howard Roark would be proud of. Simple, elegant, and without anything it doesn’t need.

I also love the integrity of it. Sure, it’s digital, but it wouldn’t have an LCD or anything. Your images would be stored on an SD card and downloaded later, recreating that delayed gratification (or frustration) getting film developed entails. There’s an E-Ink display for battery status, frames left, aspect ratio, etc. and also a clever idea of having the top being able to flip for easier use for those weird southpaws among us.

There is the problem of digitally recreating those random light leaks and imperfections that make the Holga what it is. But whatever, that’s for the scientists and Kevin Costner to figure out.

The only thing I could see going wrong with this is the hipsters getting so upset that Holga went digital, they turn on the brand. It’d be like Dylan going electric. They wouldn’t be able to wrap their little brains and wispy mustaches around the idea. The tragedy!

Debbie Carlos

June 30, 2010 // Photography

Ol’ Deb (I decided to call her Ol’ Deb.) has a series of photographs entitled Human Nature. They were all taken in Chicago’s Field Museum. All the animals are taxidermic and have been dead for years. The landscapes are all painted and the foliage is all fake. However, there is this lived-in, intimate, loving quality about the colors and composition. It’s like a Disney movie inside of an old folk’s home.

Chris Nicholls

May 27, 2010 // Fashion + Photography

I just came across this picture and it slapped me in the face. Now I want to move to the Netherlands and marry Heather Marks. Or at least get in her friend zone. We would eat soup, stay up all night placing Js in words that don’t require them, and chop wood. Chris Nicholls shot this forever ago. I’m sad I didn’t find it until now. I can’t get over that tartan pattern on the brown of the horse and the blue of the fjord. It’s so effortless and perfect.

TIm Barber

May 25, 2010 // Photography

If I had a choice as to what I wanted to be talented at (photographically), I’d want it to be portraits. There can be so much behind the simplest of images. The idea of capturing someone’s essence is staggering. Or contrary to that, you can make that same person be whoever you want them to be. It’s all up to you. Tim Barber is a great example of this. His photography captures that one special moment—the smallest increment of time—when it all comes together into this beautiful image. Maybe I’ll hire him to take all photos of me from now on. That way I won’t always have that one eye half shut thing going on. My facebook picture reel looks like a study in retardation.

Yulia Gorodinski

May 4, 2010 // Model + Photography

So Yulia Gorodinski is 26 years old, has an MA from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem in English literature, and is an accomplished photographer whose only subject is herself. She’s a Jewish model/photographer. I feel like there should be a joke involving her walking into a bar. She could play all three parts. Anyways, she’s really talented and luckily attractive, or else the whole self-portrait thing might not have been such a great idea.

Antonella Arismendi

April 28, 2010 // Fashion + Photography

If I were ever to become a (good) photographer, I think I’d have to change my name to something with more syllables. Even if you add my middle name, I’m still only up to four. This anglo-saxon heritage of mine is really holding me back. Anyways, Antonella here has made some beautiful imagery while working for a slew of different clients. She’s not stuck in one particular style, which is refreshing; though you can still tell it’s all her work. But don’t take my word for it. Go peruse her site and see what I mean.

Anoush Abrar & Aimee Hoving

April 21, 2010 // Fashion + Photography

Really really inspiring images by these two unpronounceable people. They’re from a series entitled Sea Creatures. The shapes and the color and the make-up! Spectacular. Try to tell me that homeboy up top doesn’t look like he could sting you in a fierce way. Well done, Anosodhfgoi Aborlahd and Aimaergf Hindogn. Well done.

They have much more amazing work at their site.

Heart

March 29, 2010 // Photography

I just love this photo. That’s all. The talented Oscar Falk shot it in 2006, so that means it’s like 700 internet years old. Whatever. You don’t pay me to be current. In fact, you don’t pay me at all.
