Between Bears

August 9, 2010 // Animation + Film + Illustration + Video

So for graduation from Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Eran Hilleli created this short film called Between Bears. It’s worth to watch it for the color palette alone. Very Mathew Lyons-esque. Upon posting of this video, I immediately felt really small and untalented and unaccomplished. Thanks, Eran. Thanks.

Tory’s Whisky

July 29, 2010 // Illustration + Video

This is a 1960′s ad for Tory’s Whiskey animated by Ryohei Yanagihara. I’m a big fan of Yanagihara’s style. It’s fun and carefree with a smart choice of colors. This commercial makes my inner 10-year-old want to go get hammered. As that’s impossible, maybe I’ll just go give some booze to a 10-year-old. That’s cool, right?

Fashion Empire

June 19, 2010 // Design + Fashion + Illustration

John Woo made these which in turn made me giggle and clap my hands together three times. I’m gonna go buy a Darth Vader mask for every time I dress up now. Everyone will wonder who the guy with asthma and sharp suit in the corner is. It’ll be exactly how it is now, except I’ll be wearing a super nerdy mask.

Brandon James Scott

March 18, 2010 // Art + Illustration + Video

I have a lot to talk about when it comes to BJs. (If I write his initials like that, it’s hilarious.) He’s an incredibly talented illustrator. I’ve put some of his work under the cut. His color theory is impeccable. His retro style, in combination with his slight use of texture, really sets his stuff apart.

The short video above was created by Brandon. It’s well written; smartly uses the focus to create a good depth of field so as not to look flat with its animation style; and the sound effects and comedic timing push it all over the top. Plus the bear has nipples. How I love it so. Well done, BJs. Well done.

BAFTA

March 5, 2010 // Film + Illustration

Tavis Coburn illustrated these gorgeous posters for this year’s BAFTA nominees, which doesn’t stand for Bitches After Forty: Take Aim, as I’d hoped, but rather the British Academy Film & Television Awards. Tavis has such a rad style of illustration. All the half tones make his work feel like a vintage comic book, which is never a bad thing. I’m in love with the Hurt Locker poster. His choice of concentrating on the helmet and reflection combined with the colors are reminiscent of—again—a vintage sci-fi film and such a great choice at that.

Sandra Suy

February 26, 2010 // Fashion + Illustration

If you looked up the definition of “delicate illustration complimented by clever use of color” you would find this here gorgeous work by Sandra Suy. Now, why you’d look up the definition of a phrase is beyond me. From what I understand, dictionaries only carry the definitions of words. You’re such a dummy sometimes.

Nebojsa Cvetkovic

December 29, 2009 // Illustration

Despite having a completely unpronounceable (and un-American!) name, Nebojsa Cvetkovic (I’ll call him Nebby) is super talented. I have a soft spot for hand-drawn type, and boy, Nebby, you’ve hit it. Really tasteful and smart color decisions as well. He seems to be a threat to me. I better send him some cookies and hope he quits.

Remember to extend the pinky

Absolutely gorgeous (and funny) illustration by Chris Ware for the newest issue of The New Yorker. Whoever I knock up—just be warned—our child will have daddy issues. These daddy issues will stem from a lack of attention from yours truly because I was trying to beat my high score on Doodlejump on my iPhone. I can’t help it. The game is like a drug.

Frank Gonzales

These paintings are pretty interesting. Gonzales has a fairly feminine subject matter ie. birds and flowers, yet the pieces don’t come off that way. Maybe it’s the bold “pixels” of color he puts into them that offsets it all. Either way, they’re great to look at. I love how the aforementioned pixels also mimic the feathers. Fantastic colors as well. Two more paintings after the break.
