Not fair

October 30, 2009 // Critique + Design

almost

I find it really annoying when album art far surpasses the music within, ie. the cover above. I randomly came across it whilst on the world wide web. I’d never heard of the band or its music. I was just struck by how well done the cover was. The color palette and type work perfectly with the photo—its subject matter and style. The whole design is a bit of a throw-back to the Motown Records days, which I really like. I want this joint up in my coverflow in iTunes. So I checked out the band.

And the music just sucks. It’s just really, really terrible. Shame on you, The Almost.

Nerds!

October 28, 2009 // Software + Tech

I am pretty excited about Google’s newest announcement, despite my urge to punch the guy in the video. Could he be any more awkward in front of the camera? Google Maps (on Android 2.0 devices now, iPhone soon) is now a free turn by turn navigation app. It comes with quite a few features, like satellite view and street view, that destroys other GPS applications out there. Color me nerd.

Now, only if the iPhone would allow you to take a call or text, and then get back into this app without losing anything. But I guess that’s just dangerous thinking. Sorry Big Brother Steve.

What a fantastic concept from Istanbul-based design shop, Antrepo. Bold color, simple lines, a nod to the past—it’s just wonderful. Now if they can just be put into production. The yellow or teal one would look fantastic on my nightstand next to my Hello Kitty diary.

Absolutely gorgeous (and funny) illustration by Chris Ware for the newest issue of The New Yorker. Whoever I knock up—just be warned—our child will have daddy issues. These daddy issues will stem from a lack of attention from yours truly because I was trying to beat my high score on Doodlejump on my iPhone. I can’t help it. The game is like a drug.

Clipse is at it again. I’m pretty excited for Till the Casket Drops, which drops (oh snap) December 9th. They’re one of my favorite groups ever. It’ll be tough to follow up their last album, Hell Hath No Fury, but I have faith. After hearing a couple of the leaked tracks, I done been having doubts. I’m Good and Eyes On Me were pretty weak. However, Warning, Kinda Like A Big Deal, and the latest, Popular Demand have me all nipped out again. And any track that has Cam’ron on it is a must listen in my book.

The Cat Piano

October 26, 2009 // Film + Video

This is a fantastic short film by The Peoples Public of Animation. The style, prose, and thought-out use of color all work together perfectly. Astounding art direction. Narrated by the wonderful Nick Cave. Directed by Eddie White & Ari Gibson. Produced by Jessica Brentnall. You can get more information here.

Mixtape 1

mixtape 1

This is the first of many mixtapes to come. If there’s a theme to it, I suppose it’s something along the lines of coked-out-childhoood-dance-revolution. But really, I just enjoy all of these songs and they’ll make you happy. Since Mother Nature is about to poop all over all of us (or as the gentiles call it: winter), we should enjoy some sunshine. Screw you Frosty, I’m gonna go dance in my underwear. Tracklist and download after the jump.

These paintings are pretty interesting. Gonzales has a fairly feminine subject matter ie. birds and flowers, yet the pieces don’t come off that way. Maybe it’s the bold “pixels” of color he puts into them that offsets it all. Either way, they’re great to look at. I love how the aforementioned pixels also mimic the feathers. Fantastic colors as well. Two more paintings after the break.

Oh, Tobias! You blow-hard! Welcome to the illingest of the illest—also known as Steady Clappin’. I’m starting fresh. My experience ghost writing for Gucci Mane really inspired me to start anew with a different platform. Blogging is just so serious and in this fast paced society, I can’t be left behind. So dear reader, be excited. But not too excited. That’s pressure I simply can’t live with.
