Two pennies of mines

November 30, 2009 // Critique

overrated

I’m a hater. That’s how I do. A few nights ago, I was hatin’ by myself in my room and came up with a list, as I don’t have many friends and prefer to brood. This certainly isn’t everything, and I’m sure there are some glaring omissions. That’s what the comments are for. In no particular order, here are some things that are overrated.

Music Monday

November 30, 2009 // MP3 + Monday + Music

Sorry it’s been so long. My girlfriend (Macbook Pro) decided that her graphics card was broken so the good folks at Apple had to done fix her up. Needless to say, I was a lost man without her. I can now see why people with real girlfriends are sad when said real girlfriends are gone. I used to call them gay because as I thought we all knew: chicks are for the gays. Now I know the truth. And the truth tastes like loneliness.

Anyways, this Monday it’s all about that collective of animals known as Animal Collective. Their newest EP, Fall Be Kind is stunning, as one would expect, and this I think is my favorite song from the five offered. They’ve gotten to a point as a group where they have just enough “pop” within their soundscapes to make their stuff perfect. Listening to them with headphones is a true joy. Much like pretending my Transformer toys are my minions in a daring mission to save Marissa Miller from the evil clutches of Victoria’s Secret. Don’t worry Marissa! You’ll never have to wear those skimpy bras and such ever again! I’m a strict nudist, you see.

Music Monday

November 17, 2009 // MP3 + Monday + Music

mm_phanto

Every Monday (even though this one is late), in accordance with the social networking bylaws of Twitter, I will be recommending an artist to listen to. This week it is the fascinating and fabulous Phantogram. Self-described as “street beat, psyche pop”, they have a great energy to all of their songs. Pretty hard hitting beats too. The aforementioned genre is a perfect label for them, really. TV On The Radio-esque at times.

I’d like to think that if I ever started a band, it’d sound something like this. Of course, in reality, each one of my band’s songs would sound like a 12-year-old boy going through all the stages of puberty. Really arty stuff. The critics would be hard at first, but then realize my genius after I had died young from a peculiarly strong brain freeze acquired from a strawberry banana milkshake.

Mixtape 3

November 14, 2009 // Mixtape

mixtape-3

Hey door man! This mix is all about that talkin’ music. Hip-Hop is close to my heart. So are starbursts and cute puppy dogs. I tried to put a good variety on here. Lots of different styles and flow and production. All great. I have a great taste in this music because I ghost write for Ghostface Killah. I suppose he’s just Face Killah, really. That would make me Ghostface Writah. It’s a little known fact about me. I don’t like to brag. I’m humble like that.

Colorless Coca-Cola Classic

November 14, 2009 // Design + Packaging

colorless coke 2

Pretty interesting concept from Harc Lee. By eliminating the need for inks and dyes on the can, it becomes more environmentally friendly to produce. Also, easier to recycle. However, it isn’t a perfect idea. Nutritional info (and all that other legalese) would need to be displayed. The stamped effect wouldn’t work well with smaller type.

Ville Varumo

November 12, 2009 // Photography

003

Ville Varumo. What a hilarious name. It sounds like what you would call a Scooby Doo villain. Alliteration is the sexiest way to make someone sound evil. Anyways, plot to be ruined by those meddling kids or not, the guy has some fantastic photography. Everything is so lost and abandoned, yet has the faintest spark of life—like the janitor is still there, or someone had just barely left.

A Simple Man

November 11, 2009 // Film

My panties are all up in a twist over this movie. A Single Man, which was adapted from the novel of the same title by Christopher Isherwood, is about a brilliant British college professor, (played by Colin Firth) living in LA, who just lost his longtime partner. It is the first foray into film for Tom Ford, who is an American fashion designer and former creative director for Gucci. You can see the care that was put into this feature by just watching the trailer. The cinematography, costume, and set design all look impeccable. Also, how cool is it that there is no dialogue at all in the preview? It’s amazing how you can discern a whole story through just a few collected shots.

The Lighthouse Keeper

November 10, 2009 // Animation + Film

I remember, as a child, always wanting to be an animator. I was mesmerized by the colors and the line and the form—how those artists could bring these characters and settings to life. I was raised on Disney movies. Sleeping Beauty was one of (and still is) my favorites. Oh Destin, you girl. Sleeping Beauty? Please. Lion King was tits. Simba owned it. Don’t judge me. Go watch that “girly” movie again and just look at all the backgrounds used. I would hang those on the wall. The color and texture that’s used is incredible. Anyways, I wish there were feature films animated like the above video. It’s like a painting come to life. It’s stunning. It makes me wish I really had become an animator.

Dance jorts

November 7, 2009 // MP3 + Music

miami_horror_sometimes

I don’t do a lot of dancing. I’ve found that I can’t do it unless I’m in front of my webcam or when I’m forced to pop and lock to save the local community center from greedy realtors who plan to turn it into a shopping mall. (Where on earth would the children loiter?) However, this song makes me want to dance—probably with not all of my clothes. It’s the first single off Miami Horror’s debut album, due out early next year. If the rest of the tracks are akin to this—well, then—I might just start wearing cutoff sweatshirts and pants and scrunched down socks. Because that’s what I imagine dancers wear when they practice, you see.

Also, watch the music video right hurr. It’s pretty rad. The end is kinda triflin’ though.

Mixtape 2

November 6, 2009 // Mixtape

mixtape-2

I made another one because I’m such a stand-up, classy guy. This one tends to stay in an electronic, relaxed, fall-ish mood. I can’t take credit for the photo I used in the cover. It’s from the wonderful Gemma Booth. Her photography is pretty incredible. Anywho, go listen, enjoy, and drink a cup of your favorite no-fat-peppermint-cider-soy-mocha-latte to this.
