Dolla dolla bill

April 30, 2010 // Design

Our money looks so bad. The newest iteration of our Benjamin proves it. I realize that security is a number one priority for our government. It should be. But who says that security and aesthetics have to be mutually exclusive? Michael Tyznik took it upon himself to redesign our currency with both those things in mind. As I’m not a big fan of typing and would much rather have someone do the work for me, he explains his design here. If you notice, Michael didn’t design a one dollar bill. He proposed getting rid of it and moving towards one and two dollar coins instead. The vending machine lobbyists would be furious.

I absolutely love this redesign. It’s thoughtful, considerate to America’s currency’s past, takes into account security and new features, and looks wonderful. It would even make those rumpled up coke/stripper dollars in your pocket look good.

Mansions On The Moon // Love Is Going To Destroy Me

April 29, 2010 // Music + Video

Props to my bud Dustin over at inDUSTry for bringing my severely faceted attention to this band. The video above was done in such a rad style (it’s like it’s being projected onto cloth or something) and the type treatment at the beginning gives me a boner. The music is nice too. Here’s another song, you taker, you.

Up There

April 29, 2010 // Art + Design + Film + Video

If this short film doesn’t inspire you to get out there and make something, or even appreciate something, I don’t know what will. Up There is a documentary about the dying craft of large-scale hand-painted advertisements in New York City. It’s shot beautifully. (Much like Helvetica and Objectified, also both fantastic films.) Now I wish I were an apprentice. Just not the kind where I have to listen to a man with a roosting owl on his head talk.

Antonella Arismendi

April 28, 2010 // Fashion + Photography

If I were ever to become a (good) photographer, I think I’d have to change my name to something with more syllables. Even if you add my middle name, I’m still only up to four. This anglo-saxon heritage of mine is really holding me back. Anyways, Antonella here has made some beautiful imagery while working for a slew of different clients. She’s not stuck in one particular style, which is refreshing; though you can still tell it’s all her work. But don’t take my word for it. Go peruse her site and see what I mean.

McQ Fall 2010

April 28, 2010 // Fashion

Its really quite sad that Alexander McQueen’s gone. He was a wonderful designer with a fantastic name. His fall collection for McQ seems to take inspiration from that Oliver Twist British grunge look. (Oy! I cut my own hair, mate!) As a whole, all the patches and layers and textures are just lovely. And I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait until the kilt hits the mainstream. Until then, I’m just going to dip my toes in the kilt water by starting to tie sweaters around my waist like one of those women over 40 who think it hides their ass.

Levi van Veluw

April 27, 2010 // Art

The human form is something that everyone on earth can relate too. Except for maybe Courtney Love. There’s a reason we see faces in stucco and clouds. Levi van Veluw is trying to reverse all that and make you notice the actual form of it all without noticing the human form. I think. I could be wrong. I didn’t read his explanation. Artists shouldn’t have to explain anything lest they come off sounding like one big fart and looking like one big wanking motion.

Music Monday

April 26, 2010 // MP3 + Monday + Music

Did you know that I <3 Broken Social Scene? Well girlfriend, I totally <3 them so much. This song is like someone is trying to get me to dance during a really cool party by singing to me through a megaphone. Well mister, you may have this dance.

M.I.A. // Born Free

April 26, 2010 // Music + Video

A warning: this video is not for those who would be offended by nude fat people, child assassination, and redheads. If none of those things bother you, watch M.I.A.’s latest and try to figure out why savagely rounding up gingers is so hilarious.

Music Monday even though it’s Thursday

April 22, 2010 // MP3 + Monday + Music

Don’t be a back seat blogger. I know it’s Thursday. I just had to share this here song whichoo. Avi Buffalo kill it with their arrangement. At about 3:15 into the song, try not to get drunk off the guitars. It’s all so nostalgic and wonderful. If the band that’s been practicing in the apartment below me for the last while were half as good as Avi Buffalo, I’d be nodding and smiling throughout the night instead of clomping the ground with a broom handle like I’m an 80-year-old widow that’s had a long day of organizing Sears coupons and just wants to get to sleep before 7.
